Sassicaia Look-alike: $35.95!!
The return of a big-time Super Tuscan client favorite: Aia Vecchia SOR UGO. This property is literally adjacent to Sassicaia, and you can buy a 2 pack WOOD CASE of this for a bottle of what some vintages of Sassicaia run!
Does this taste exactly like the $300 Sassicaia?
No. Of course not. But put it in a blind tasting of high-end Italian Cabernet blends and I think you'd be pretty shocked. For $36 (!!) this HUGELY over-delivers. The 2010 vintage is getting some fantastic press and I am really high on this Bordeaux-styled red!!
When the wine called "sassicaia" (meaning "place with a lot of rocks", in reference to the vineyards near Categneto Carducci) was released in 1968, the phenomenon of the Super Tuscan was born. Sharing a rarefied position, with vineyards intimately proximate to the origin of this most famous Super Tuscan, the Pellegrini family, owners of Aia Vecchia, have been grape growers in the area for several generations. Owning seventy-four acres of the estates under the Bolgheri DOC, in some of the most favored locations, Aia Vecchia is not only emulating, but equaling the quality of their more famed neighbors.
This wine gets pretty big points (several 95's) every year - this year a 92 (so far) from the Wine Advocate. But besides all that, the wine is just a killer, powerhouse of a red that will satisfy on so many levels, at a crazy-good price.
2010 AIA VECCHIA "SOR UGO" Bolgheri Superiore DOC $35.95!! WA92
WOODEN 6-PACKS ON REQUEST --- $216 a 6-pack! C'mon!
WA92: "The top denomination wine from this estate, the 2010 Bolgheri Superiore Sor Ugo delivers massive, dark concentration and an exceedingly supple mouth-feel. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small part Petit Verdot (all aged 18 months in barrique). The beautifully rich wine inches forward over the palate with heft and determination, imparting bright cherry, blackberry and spice as it moves slowly along."
