UBER-RARE To-Kalon 2010 Cab!
Only the third time in 12 years we have EVER offered this exceedingly rare wine. The 2010 (a new release!) is even more mind-blowing than the 2009! This is a long story, but worth it, especially for you dead-serious Napa Cab lovers/collectors. A real rarity!
Think you're a culty CA Cab expert? I thought I was too. Think you're a Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard expert? I thought I was too. Got every 99-point vintage of Schrader and Paul Hobbs, Tor and Realm and the like in your cellar? Well, if you have this one, or have heard of it, KUDOS to you. YOU, my friend, are a DEAD SERIOUS To-Kalon diehard, a hardcore, a lifer.
Today's offering of this utterly delicious, virtually unobtainable, and drop-dead stellar bottle of world-class Napa Cabernet, is an unusual but pleasant aligning of rare bedfellows. ONLY 3 BARRELS MADE!! That is 75 cases! Ah, where to start...
OK: first off, I like to think I generally have good relationships with my competitors in the wine business, locally and otherwise. We refer customers to each other at times and other times we play our cards a little closer. It's all good. So, I was not too surprised when Margaux Singleton, owner of Enoteca Wine Shop, called me up and asked if she could "come by and taste me on something." This is not unusual. At times us retailers compare notes, gossip, gripe about pricing, etc. Margaux is highly respected in the Valley, but I'd never met her and she's a little less "out there" than yours truly as far as a penchant for email blasts, bold fonts, hyperlinks, wacky photos and the like. She's classy, she's classic. She can tell you hilarious and fascinating stories about Napa Valley. Go visit her shop sometime, you'll see what I mean.
Anyway, Margaux shows up with this... A massive, heavy, masculine bottle of 100% Beckstoffer To-Kalon Cabernet that SHE makes. It's called MX (first and last letter of her name) and it ROCKS. She has had access to specifically chosen tiny patches of To-Kalon cabernet for a looooong time (and most are squished between one or more 100-point wineries rows). She made a few barrels of wine herself starting in '04 and sold 100% of it through her shop. The 2010, a stellar vintage that it has shaped up to be, had just been released, and she wanted to know what I thought of it. Well, I flipped. I mean, this was a GREAT, distinguished, classy and fabulously made Cabernet, with classic To-Kalon depth, earth and spice. We talked for almost 2 hours. I turned on the Blicker charm (ha ha) and said: "You should let me sell a few cases. This is genius. I have some hardcore To-Kalon lovers who would flip."
I won't go into all the details, but I snagged a few 3-packs (one for me). Let me emphasize this, though. If you grab a few bottles (it ain't cheap, but greatness doesn't come at $20), you will have in your hands one of the very rarest and finest made To-Kalons out there. Your wine friends will COVET your bottles. She even has her barrels custom crafted by the cooper who made Chateau Petrus' barrels in house for decades. One of the very few other wineries to get these rare barrels is Harlan Estate. Absolutely tremendous wine. Too many reasons to buy it, but ask me if you want more. And now I will shut up since I only have a pittance to sell anyway!!
