WINE GEEK ALERT: World-Class, High-Scoring Beaujolais
This wine is made by a genius. It's thrilling, cerebral, totally out-of-the-box but straight up FANTASTIC. And because it's Beaujolais, not Burgundy, you can drink like a king for under $20/$30! This is must-have stuff for serious wine lovers of virtually all stripes. The 2012's have not been rated yet, but all his wines score in the low/mid 90's, and the 2012's, due to the vintage, will be off the charts.
Most hardcore wine geeks know that there is world-class Beaujolais. Even if the rest of the world does not, or associates it with inexpensive Nouveau (which this is the polar opposite of). "I would happily pay $60+ for the Brouilly", I thought, the moment after tasting it. You can tell it is made by a master, right away. BRILLIANT STUFF!
Jean-Claude Lapalu works exclusively with 60-80 year old vines. He is 100% organic, and practices biodynamism. The Wine Advocate said this recently...."any oenophiles who haven’t experienced a Lapalu wine (very much including ones who don’t think Beaujolais will excite them and who are therefore, unfortunately, unlikely to be reading this!) could scarcely pick a better time to do so."
All of his 2011's (a difficult vintage) scored in the 90-93 point range. I will include some of the tasting notes from those to give you a sense of what the Wine Advocate thinks, but I want to STRESS THIS: The 2012's ARE BETTER. The vintage is much better. These 2012's I tasted yesterday blew me away. And they WILL get big scores.
All that aside, the wines really just put you in the mind of Burgundy. Juicy, extracted, deep, complex and powerful Burgundy, but with the structure, regality and intensity of great Burg, too. Gorgeous, sweet, complex aromas, low alcohol, deliciously complex and finessed. Fantastic near-term drinking, but also great candidates for the cellar. TRUST ME!!
2012 Jean Claude Lapalu Beaujolais-Villages Vieilles Vignes $19.99 just a ridiculously fantastic wine for $20. Beautiful.
2012 Jean Claude Lapalu Brouilly la Croix des Rameaux Vieilles Vignes $29.99 $180 a 6-pack! $360 a case!
This Brouilly is the big dog, the single vineyard rock star. Amazing wine. It will be an epiphany for you~!! Here is what the Wine Advocate said about the 2011:
WA93: "A head-turning, bittersweetly perfumed, floral dimension – suggesting buddleia, rowan and iris – accrues to Lapalu’s 2011 Brouilly Croix des Rameaux, somehow seeming perfectly attuned to its breezy, high-elevation site. High-toned added suggestions of herbal distillates combine for a Chartreuse-like impression. Ripe cassis and blueberry inform a sappy, soothingly rich and seamless palate, while crushed stone, toasted nuts, mineral salt and subtly smoky black tea inflections add interest as well as mouthwatering allure to a sustained, interactively layered and infectiously juicy finish. There is an airy openness here that, like its lift, defies this wine’s sheer richness. Plan to follow this beauty – among the high points of its vintage, not to mention a superb value – at least through 2020. "
I can't stress the greatness here enough - grab the 2012's before the scores come out! Arrives One Week.
