Pristine, Rare and Vintage California and European wines in the heart of the Napa Valley.
Rumor overheard: at a tasting at this winery, a VERY well-known wine writer commented on this wine "it is among the Top 3 Amarones I have ever tasted but can never review as there is so little made..."
Dear Oenophile,
Well, I can believe that. I was truly dumbfounded myself on tasting this gem. We don't see a lot of good Amarone here that often (partly because rabid collectors snap it all up before it gets to California!), but this was a one-off that an Italian importer had pulled out of his bag at the end of a long tasting in our warehouse yesterday. We loved everything he sampled us on, but THIS - this was something in another stratosphere, in another realm. So intense, so complex, with insane layers of port-ish nuances but a completely dry wine. Cocoa, tea, sandalwood, all super long and fresh. Fantastic.
Giuseppe Lonardi makes what can only be called utterly CLASSIC, old-school Amarone from old-vines that produce an astounding low yield of ONE BOTTLE PER VINE.
Trust me, you will understand the significance of that when you taste this gorgeous, intense and fantastically complex wine. We were stunned- but not only that - this isn't priced like the big dogs ($100+) - it is incredibly reasonable for what you will get - and you will be one of the very few in this country to own it! Trust your wine merchant!
2008 Giuseppe Lonardi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico D.O.C. $55.99 (and worth twice that!) $336 a 6-pack!! Don't miss!! ARRIVES ONE WEEK
6-pack wooden cases (shipped for a bit extra on request)
Importer notes: "Matured for 22 months in French barriques, it is a neo-classic Italian wine that will age for 15 years, and a very limited production. Of all the wines of Italia, none is more breath-takingly unique than the wine of Verona called Amarone. And, in our opinion, few make it better than Giuseppe Lonardi. His Amarone is remarkably port-like and very concentrated, with powerful, heady aromas of dried fruit potpourri, chocolate, cedar chest, and exotic spice. The production is micro, and it shows in this luxurious, breathtaking wine. That is one reason why this monumental wine will age for 30+ years."

Like art or music or books, wine is a very subjective passion. Although we are based in the Napa Valley, we carry thousands of wines from all over this planet. The wines in this list represent various particular favorites of our staff: aged Alsatians, sublime Sonoma pinot, brawny Northern Rhones, steely Chablis, you name it: someone at BPW has picked this as a particular favorite. See for yourself.
