Dear Oenophile,

I had two "whoa" and/or "a-ha" moments yesterday. The first was the shear joy of drinking an older bottle of 1991 Araujo Eisele. It was one of those moments when your love for wine, your "raison d'etre" crystallizes perfectly - just brilliant, perfect. What a wine. A-ha indeed!

The second was checking out the new issue of Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - holy cow! Now, we really like Tanzer and his reviews. He doesn't get the same amount of hullabaloo as other writers because he is generally very conservative when it comes to scores, so he doesn't make big splashes with lots of 100-pointers, etc. But his writing is very accurate and thoughtful, in my book. So when I saw the slew of huge ratings for California Cabs (like those seen in todays' offer), I was shocked (in a good way). 98+ for Harlan, Kapcsandy, Screaming Eagle, etc...these are some of the highest scores he has EVER given, for ANY wine from ANY region. Impressive.

SO- California is still on a big roll with 09's, 10's, and 11's - who ever doubted it?
