JONATA -- High-Scoring New Releases

Juggernauts. Tour de force wines. Massive, gorgeous classics from Matt Dees. 2011 in Los Olivos was absolutely superb. You MUST have these.

Dear Oenophile,

Those who've bought wine from me over the years (or decades, now, come to think of it) know how I am prone to sing the praises of Jonata's wines from the rooftops and pour it (well decanted) down the gullet of any poor soul who happens to drop by my office. I truly love Matt Dee's wines, the place (in the rolling hills of Los Olivos) and the story (conceived and planted by the owner of Screaming Eagle, long story, ask me if you want).

If you didn't read my Jonata Todos offer from last week, let's reiterate: I think this is the most serious winery in the Santa Barbara area. These guys did everything they weren't supposed to do and blew all the critics away when Matt started releasing the wines. The wines are VERY SERIOUS in style- they are tightly wound, incredibly endowed and utterly PACKED wines. They are like old-school Bordeaux in the sense that they speak of their place (sandy soils, ocean proximity) and they give a mere glimpse of the potential when young, but that glimpse is just drop-dead amazing.

Ah, enough. OK, wait - Parker has called the Cabernet Franc "the finest in California" and "reminiscent of Cheval Blanc". The Cabernet he calls "a tour de force in winemaking/viticulture."

Here are the wines ---  Super-limited, to say the least - Arrives two weeks!

2011 JONATA PROPRIETARY RED EL ALMA DE JONATA (CABERNET FRANC) $124.99  WA96

WA96: "While there was no El Almas produced in 2010 due to late rains, the 2011 El Alma de Jonata is beautiful. Most similar to the 2008, with pure, pretty notes of wild herbs, dark chocolate, tobacco, crushed flowers and currants, it flows onto the palate with beautiful freshness and purity, big richness and a great finish. Give it another couple of years and enjoy it through 2026. Drink 2015-2026."

2011 JONATA PROPRIETARY RED EL DESAFIO DE JONATA (CABERNET SAUVIGNON) $124.99  WA95, AG94-96

WA95: "Offering up beautiful Cabernet character, the 2011 El Desafio de Jonata is gorgeous and very Bordeaux like given its density and tannin profile. Blackberry, currants, spice and floral nuances all emerge from the glass and this elegant, layered 2011 has full-bodied richness and depth. Give it another 2-3 years and drink it through 2026. Drink 2016-2026."
