Domaine Ponsot Chapelle Chambertin 2011, (BH92-95) from The BPW - Merchants of rare and fine wines.

Domaine Ponsot Chapelle Chambertin

Vintage: 2011
Region: France--Burgundy--Red
Appellation: Gevrey Chambertin, Cote de Nuits

BH92-95
Rated 92-95 points by the Burghound: `(from a .60 ha parcel split 50/50 between Chapelle and En Gemeaux). A brooding and inexpressive nose of both red and dark berry fruit evidences discreet liqueur-like nuances as well. The impressively scaled and palate coating flavors coat the mouth with dry extract and possess imposing size and weight before culminating in a firm, austere and beautifully persistent finish. This is not for the faint-hearted as it`s a big Chapelle and clearly intended to be cellared for the long haul as this is also not going to drink especially well young.`More info about this producer from the Burghound: `The always direct and sometimes ironic Laurent Ponsot said that there `really isn`t much to say about 2011 that is interesting. It was a typical Burgundian vintage, which is to say small, cool and wet but with a little diligence, it was possible to pull a rabbit out of the hat despite all of that. I waited very late to pick in the context of what was a very early vintage, which is to say the 12th of September. Most of my neighbors were finished before I even started. In fact I can tell you that it`s a strange feeling to be in the vineyards all by yourself when it`s harvest time. Because we sort in the vineyards there was almost nothing to do when the fruit arrived at the cuverie. There was a bit of rot but again, we get rid of anything substandard before it has a chance to contaminate the clean fruit. I did my normal vinification, which is to say we do almost nothing except watch the fermenters bubble away and then put the wine into some barrels and then we watch those do whatever they want to do. For the first six months I never ever taste the wines so it`s only usually when the cellars start to warm up that I begin looking at them in earnest. We taste from time to time and when we think the wines are ready we bottle them and voila, you now know what I do about the vintage!` As was the case in 2009 and 2010, there will be no Morey villages Cuvee des Grives in 2011 as the vineyard is being replanted. As the scores and specific wine commentaries suggest Ponsot has clearly outperformed the vintage in 2011. What I find interesting is that even though he picked as much as two weeks later than some of his neighbors, his wines do not display any hints of surmaturite or lack of acid support.`
