Vino Nobile di Montepulciano completes the trinity of three notable DOCGs: Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
About 60 km east of Chianti and north of Montalcino, as one moves east toward the town of Montepulciano, the landscape morphs; dramatic vertiginous valleys near Siena and Chianti give way to broad, gently rolling hillside vineyards in Caggiole; the Sangiovese of Chianti gives way to the distinctive Prugnolo Gentile clone (a local variant of Sangiovese) of Montepulciano.
Il Macchione has 7 hectares of chalk and clay soils, and from my tasting, knows exactly what to do with it. At this excellent price (the BEST in the country), I would not hesitate to grab a 6-pack and drink it over the next year - wonderful, gentle, flavorful wine that tastes like the ancient soils it comes from. I particularly love the citrusy, oolong tea note here, with the feminine, flavorful, red berry fruit. BEAUTIFUL STUFF!
