What to say here....from this hallowed vineyard (Colgin made it famous with who-knows how many 95-100 point scores), the 2012 is probably the finest wine since the 2007, but that is splitting hairs. The Lamb's sell all their wine via mailing list and a few select retailers, and never submit them for reviews. Just trust me on this one...the wine is tremendous - 100% Cabernet - darkly powerful, packed with brooding wild berry notes, a deep earth feel to it (I know, hard to interpret, but it feels like drinking the land, I guess...), just the right amounts of French oak spice, perfect acidity balance...just classic and rich and a joy.
This is a once-a-year opportunity! If you are SERIOUS about great Napa Cabernet for the cellar....PLEASE, please get a few of these!!
2012 HL (Herb Lamb Vineyards) CABERNET SAUVIGNON $150!!
The Herb Lamb vineyard is at the base of Howell Mountain, and produces world-class fruit, as you likely know. Jennifer and Herb are serene, modest and wonderful folks who eschew the spotlight and just quietly make a few hundred cases of killer Cab, that they sell almost exclusively via their mailing list (they don't send their wines in to be rated). But I begged and cajoled Jennifer as I always do and she relented and gave me a handful of bottles....for YOU.
Here are the winery tasting notes:
"The 2012 HL Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is warm climate wine from an amazing vintage, very balanced and with great structure. The fruit is very prevalent; the color deep and intense. The flavors are focused showing spice, tobacco and cigar box and a deep well of aromas. This wine is very expressive of the vineyard in a warm vintage with the typical herbal backbone of the vineyard site, like walking through a field of violets and herbs.
Winemaker Michael Trujillo notes:
“Even in the nose it shines, giving black cherry and wild berry aromas. The wine is fresh and fruity, but still shows the typical menthol, briary notes that are found in all wines from this vineyard. As it opens up in the glass, there are flavors of cigar box and vanilla, with ripe red fruits and even black olive. The flavors fill your mouth and continue to unfold — the structure is very uplifting and although soft in its youth, the back of the palate will fill in as it ages.
The finish keeps lingering with coffee and caramel and doesn’t fade out, highlighting the finely integrated tannins and great structure. This wine is a real crowd pleaser and will age well. Drink in 8-10 years, although it may be able to last much longer.”
