Appellation: Brouilly, Beaujolais
Stefan Blicker, owner says: Brouilly. What is this? Besides being knock-out great and still relatively undiscovered (and cheap!), it's red wine from the GAMAY grape, from Beaujolais (just south of Burgundy). Brouilly is one of the ten designated "Crus", and this is single-vineyard old-vine Gamay, and it'll will blow you away at the price. Think of a chewier, more gutsy pinot noir. That's what I love about it. It has the delicacy and femininity of pinot, but the oomph and structure of something else...old school Grenache, maybe. Anyway, it's more Sigourney Weaver than Julia Roberts, if that helps. Jean Claude Lapalu is considered one of the finest producers in all of Beaujolais, and I beg you to give this a try. These are cellar-able wines, too, they will improve for another 5 years, with ease. Wonderfully complex, fun to drink, and great to pair with food due to their light to medium body, complexity of aromas and flavors, and low alcohol. Trust your wine merchant!!
