Sylvain Cathiard Vosne Romanee 2009, 750ml (BH90) from The BPW - Merchants of rare and fine wines.

Sylvain Cathiard Vosne Romanee

750ml

Vintage: 2009
Region: France--Burgundy--Red
Appellation: Vosne Romanee, Cote de Nuits

BH90
Rated 90 points by the Burghound: `A mix of wood and natural spice sits atop red and blackberry liqueur aromas that merge into rich, concentrated and pure flavors that happily possess plenty of extract as the tannins are robust and quite firm. This is a relatively powerful effort that isn`t an exercise in finesse but it most impressive nonetheless. A big Vosne villages.` -- Allen MeadowsMore information from the Burghound: `The big news here is that as with Domaine Burguet (see above), there will be a changing of the generational guard as 2010 is the last vintage for Sylvain Cathiard. Cathiard explained that he has been slowly turning over the reins to his son Sebastian and while the elder Cathiard will continue to be a `presence`, the main decisions and day-to-day operational choices will now be assumed by the junior Cathiard. As to the 2010 vintage, the elder Cathiard observed that they `did not have the big hit to quantity that most domaines suffered. We were off only about 10% though our yields are never very high which explains at least some of the discrepancy. Also, other than one parcel, we really weren`t particularly hard hit by the December 2009 frost, which made a significant difference for some due to significant vine losses. We began picking on the 24th of September and brought in ripe fruit with reasonably good sugars and excellent acidities. As to the wines, the 2010s are entirely classic and in particular I like the sense of balance and harmony. They have a bit less acidity than the 2008s yet are every bit as refreshing and lively. I believe that they will be very popular even though they are quite different from the ?09s.` For good reasons I praised the Cathiard ?09s but his 2010s are arguably ever-so-slightly better at least when considered as a whole.`
