Louis Jadot Beaune Greves 2009, (BH89) from The BPW - Merchants of rare and fine wines.

Louis Jadot Beaune Greves

Vintage: 2009
Region: France--Burgundy--Other
Appellation: Beaune, Cote de Beaune
Producer: Jadot, Louis

BH89
Rated 89 points by the Burghound: `As it was from barrel, the expressive and really quite pretty nose evidences moderate wood influence on the ripe aromas of plum, red raspberry and red currant that leads to detailed, intense and lightly mineral-inflected flavors that possess silky if firm tannins and good balance on the mildly austere finish. Again, as was the case from barrel, there is presently somewhat limited complexity though there is enough overall depth of material to have reasonable optimism that more will develop over the next decade.`More information from the Burghound: `As is usually the case, I met with Jacques Lardiere who is the technical director for Jadot. His take on the 2010 vintage was that `it didn`t start out well for us as we had considerable frost-related losses from the deep freeze that occurred in December 2009. Then, the flowering did not go well either, which further reduced yields, particularly in red. Then, we were hit by hail in August, primarily in Santenay. Ironically, the reduced crop loads basically saved the harvest in my view because otherwise given the cool summer weather we would never have achieved adequate ripeness levels. But I`m not joking when I say that yields were down as we were off some 50% in the Cote de Nuits where we had the worst of the frost damage and around 40% overall. We picked one vineyard on the 17th of September and then stopped before recommenced on the 22. The crop was exceptionally clean in the Cote de Nuits but a bit less so in the Cote de Beaune as there was more rain in the southern part. For the reds potential alcohols averaged right around 12.5%, which is perfectly acceptable. We did a total cuvaison that averaged 27 days with a largely typical vinification for us. As to the standout villages, in the Cote de Nuits I really like what we obtained in Nuits and Chambolle and in the Cote de Beaune Volnay really shined. Overall, because of the low yields and very high incidence of shot berries, the 2010s are quite concentrated and because of that I decided to use a bit more new wood than usual.``
