Domaine des Malandes Chablis les Clos 2012, (BH91-93) from The BPW - Merchants of rare and fine wines.

Domaine des Malandes Chablis les Clos

Vintage: 2012
Region: France--Burgundy--White
Appellation: Chablis

BH91-93
Rated 91-93 points by the Burghound: `(from a .53 ha parcel planted in 1962 and matured in mostly older oak but there is a small percentage of new wood). This is a bit more elegant compared to the Vaudesir with its ripe, pure and pretty aromas of lavender, apple, wet stone and white orchard fruit scents. There is fine density to the powerful and muscular broad-scaled flavors that manage to retain a fine sense of detail on the palate staining and wonderfully persistent finish. This is presently quite backward it will need a few years to find its center.` -- Allen Meadows in Issue #52Additional Information from the Burghound: `Lyne Marchive directs this 25 ha Domaine along with regisseur and enologist Guenole Breteaudeau. Her comments about the 2012 vintage were that `it was a capricious growing season full of extremes that included frost, hail and baking heat. We went from a 20? F April where there was some frost damage to a lousy flowering to a moderate July to an insanely hot August. We were lucky in a sense because we were able to effectively use our anti-frost pots in Vaudesir but not everyone did and it cost them. There were four nights in a row but the 17th of April is when it got really cold and there were losses. The cold weather wasn`t over as it was again very cold on the 17th of May though the vegetation was far enough along at that point that no one suffered much if any problems. On the 20th of May there was hail on the right bank and we suffered some loss of fruit in Fourchaume. The flowering was both troubled and extended, which resulted in lots of shatter and uneven ripening and thus you had to be precise in your picking decisions. For example, the flowering in Chablis usually lasts about 7 days but in 2012 it good if not perfect acidities. Potential alcohols averaged 12.5 to 13% which is more than adequate for the style of wine that we are trying to make. Overall, 2012 is a good to very good vintage that should drink well over the medium term.` I have said this before but it`s worth repeating that Marchive and Breteaudeau continue to drive the quality of the Malandes wines to new heights. Readers who are not familiar with the wines owe it to themselves to try a few bottles; moreover the prices are reasonable and thus the wines offer excellent price/quality ratios.`
