Olivier Bernstein Clos de la Roche 2010, 750mL (BH94, WA93-95, ST94+) from The BPW - Merchants of rare and fine wines.

Olivier Bernstein Clos de la Roche

750mL

Vintage: 2010
Region: France--Burgundy--Red
Appellation: Morey St. Denis, Cote de Nuits
Condition: lnl

BH94, WA93-95, ST94+
Rated 94 points by the Burghound: `A highly complex and unusually elegant nose for young Clos de la Roche features notes of purple fruit, violets and spiced plum along with the usual pungent earth character that can also be found on the rich, intense and broad-shouldered flavors that possess a seductively textured mid-palate as well as excellent length. There is good phenolic ripeness to the supporting structural elements as well as plenty of tannin buffering extract. In sum, this very firm but wellbalanced effort is very clearly built to age and will need plenty of cellar time`More info about this producer from the Burghound: `Olivier Bernstein has packed up and moved south to fancy new digs in the heart of Beaune. The design is clean and efficient and does a nice job of integrating the new with the old. Readers should note that because I group domaines by geography in terms of my coverage that in the future the Bernstein wines will appear in the Issue devoted to the Cote de Beaune reds. A new base of operations is not the only change here as I was told that .42 ha of Gevrey `Les Champeaux` and .18 ha of Mazis- Chambertin were purchased, which is obviously a major coup for Bernstein as parcels of Mazis are very, very hard to come by. And in yet one more change, Bernstein noted that with only one exception he is now responsible for all of the viticulture in the parcels from which he sources grapes, which he maintains is almost as good as owning them because of the additional control that it gives him. As to the 2011 vintage, Bernstein noted that `we began picking very early, which is to say August 29th, because we have mostly parcels of old vines that give very low yields and thus tend to mature earlier. The fruit was for the most part quite clean and thus we were able to use a relatively high percentage of whole clusters, which varied of course but I would put the average at about 60%. I elected to go with a relatively short cuvaison and almost no punch downs as I wanted to emphasize the natural elegance of the vintage.` Bernstein also commented that because his wines are bottled with slightly higher levels of CO2, he suggests that readers decant them if they`re going to open bottles early on. As to the now inbottle 2010s they are every bit as good as what I saw from barrel last year and they are definitely worth checking out.`
